Home made ac is not really practical. Yes there are ways to do it, but the energy consumed/pumped ratio would probably not be as optimized as a manufactured one. It would probably cost more in excess run cost than one bought new.


There are however many other ways to cool buildings that are practical.

Whole house fan

Evaporative cooling

Shade

Earth tubes
