Der Schachtelhalm wächst in verschiedenen feuchten Nadelwäldern in Deutschland. Ähnliche Pflanzen sind vielleicht auch in anderen Gebieten der Erde und anderen klimatischen Bedingungen zu finden. Der Schachtelhalm wird geschnitten und kann kurz darauf als Feile verwendet werden. Dazu wird der Halm quer zur Wuchsrichtung über die Fingelnägel gerieben. Kurze Stücke können handlicher verwendet werden. Eine Schere eignet sich viel Besser als ein Messer um den Schachtelhalm zu schneiden.
