Lye splashes into eyes can cause blindness. Some sort of eye safety wear is necessary if you want to keep seeing.


Any dead animals may be used to obtain fat for soapmaking. They need not be entirely fresh.


"suitable for all household purposes"

Only barely. Personal hygiene requires superfatted soap to avoid skin irritation, but superfatted is no good for most other tasks. Soaps for use as shampoo has different requirements again. Soap for laundry contains free alkali. Etc.

You could use one product for all, but it would be an awful performance product all round - not to mention the fact that extra steps than mentioned in the article would be needed to ensure no free alkali and no free fat.
